Administration Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.
While Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.
At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, unions sought a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute staff reductions.
An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
These terminations took place on the very day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but not the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.
Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
