The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
