European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
