New research suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
